Acne is an inflammatory skin disease that is caused by clogged up hair follicles. The result are legions known as pimples or zits. When the skin produces excess sebum, this causes the skin pores to become blocked resulting in acne. Acne lesions are mostly found on the face and neck, but are also known to spread to the arms, back, and shoulders.
What is Sebum?
The glands under the skin produce an oily substance what is known as sebum. Sebum is made up of fat lipids. There is still question as to why the body produces excess sebum, but it is an important substance that is needed for healthy individuals.
Who Can Get Acne?
Acne is most commonly found in young adolescents, during the teenage years. You can almost say, about 90 out of every 100 individuals have had some sort of experience with an occasional pimple, whitehead, or blackhead. The average american though, will pass through this phase and by their mid-twenties will slowly see their acne problems disappear. However, for some individuals, acne can be much more severe, requiring medication or home remedy.
